What is Bibliotherapy?
Bibliotherapy is the use of literature—books, poetry, song lyrics, and more—and writing to aid you in your journey toward greater mental health and recovery.
Bibliotherapy has been around for a long time, and is used by mental health professionals, educators, and librarians to address different goals and objectives. Here at Curated Therapy Solutions, I use bibliotherapy as a complementary method with additional evidence-based practices to help you achieve your specific mental health goals.
Bibliotherapy can help you to:
Increase your self-awareness
Learn new strategies for approaching your problems
Build community
Regulate your nervous system
Develop greater mind-body awareness
There are a few different types of bibliotherapy.
Creative bibliotherapy: Stories, poems, and fiction are discussed, often in a group.
Developmental bibliotherapy: Often used as an educational tool to help people understand their stage of life, or their child or other family member’s stage of life.
Prescriptive bibliotherapy: Specific books are prescribed by a clinician to help an individual develop new habits, coping strategies, or otherwise address a specific challenge.
Therapeutic bibliotherapy: Books and other storytelling methods are used in combination with other types of therapeutic approaches to address mental health challenges.
